Photography by Al Satterwhite

Al Satterwhite's photographs have been published in about every major American magazine, including Car & Driver Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Life Magazine, Newsweek Magazine,Time Magazine, People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, just to name a few. He is a photojournalist, an advertising photographer, and a DP.

Dr. Hunter S. Thompson by Al Satterwhite

Hunter and Al were friends since covering the Republican Convention in Miami Beach in 1972. In 1974 Hunter requested Playboy send Al to Cozumel (an island off of Yucatan, Mexico) to photograph him for an upcoming interview by Craig Vetter in Playboy Magazine.

After picking up his rental car, Al headed for the hotel, and knew where Hunter would be from an earlier trip when they had both been there covering a deep sea fishing tournament that went sideways (as most of Hunter's projects were apt to do, although usually in a very interesting way)... Al found Hunter and Craig at Pepe's bar on the waterfront in the small downtown area of Cozumel, along with a small collection of locals, sitting on the balcony well into their daily drinking, and proceeded to join them.

The Editors of Playboy Magazine have just re-released Craig Vetter's 1974 interview of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, along with another of Al's photographs, in their March 2013 issue, as part of their '50 Years of the Playboy Interview' series.

Look for Al's upcoming book: "The Cozumel Diary, Running Amuck in Cozumel with the King of Gonzo... and Other Weird Tales".

The Racers by Al Satterwhite

The Titans by Al Satterwhite

This is a black and white photo essay of Muhammad Ali and Arnold Schwarzenegger during their early years, training for their titles. They are champions, Titans of their generation, for one simple reason: It never occurred to them that they weren’t champions. These two men had an unprecedented awareness, a power within them, which expressed a winner. And, it was merely a matter of time before the rest of the world recognized them as champions.

Satterwhite’s book, “The Titans” is a limited printed edition book stemming from his time spent with Muhammad Ali and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

These prints and his book, "The Titans", are all available for purchase in our Artist Store.
